Position Summary

Stewards Individual Placements (SIP), a program of Conservation Legacy, places individual placements across the nation in projects that build capacity, improve access to natural resources, develop and support innovative solutions, develop opportunities for service and economic development, and empower leaders. The Preservation & Trades Program is a signature intern placement program with HPTC and Stewards. The vision of the partnership is to operationalize historic preservation and traditional trades programming as a signature program for Stewards. Working with leadership at HPTC and within Stewards, the Program Director is a member of the Stewards Individual Placements Program and is responsible for general operations, member
management, community partnerships, and emerging opportunities associated with the National Parks Service(NPS) Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) and working to develop the emerging Maryland corps programming.

Program Responsibilities

This is a dynamic multi-faceted program that will:

  • Direct the intern placement sites in finalizing site host applications and workplans for Stewards HPTC Traditional Trades members which serve with park units across the country.
  • Oversee the recruitment and relocation for members serving with the Historic Stewards Program based out of Frederick, Maryland.
  • Engage with local trade schools to recruit students to serve as Historic Stewards members.
  • Connect the work of the HPTC program to community contacts to support members relocating to serve through working with and supporting the goals of The Campaign for Historic Trades, a program of Preservation Maryland
  • Supporting work assigned to Stewards through NPS Maintenance Action Teams (MAT) or through the facilities management offices to scope out assigned work for maintenance, identifying projects through the Maryland Park Service and more
  • Supporting the members assigned to those projects in training and work.
  • Developing support and programming for the upcoming Park, Planning, Facilities and Land rigorous internships with the guidance provided from HPTC.
  • Assist in the development (planning and funding) for a Maryland Conservation Corps by working in tandem with the Corps Directors for Stewards and Appalachian Conservation Corps and Preservation Maryland (as directed).

Outcomes & Functions of Position

Success in this position will result in the continued support of the Historic Preservation Training Program within Stewards. The candidate will work to find and secure additional funding to support members in the field as well as build a Maryland based
conservation Corps program with guidance and support from the Corps Directors of the Stewards Individual Placements and Appalachian Conservation Corps Programs.

Category I – Leadership and Program Management

  • Supports Corps Director in reviewing agreements and site applications and position descriptions to ensure compliance and accuracy between agency partners and agreement scope of work.
  • Supervise, train, and support assigned program coordinator(s) that ensures their delivery of high-level customer service.
  • Create and implement successful recruitment plan to fill positions.
  • Ensure compliance with AmeriCorps, Conservation Legacy, National Park Service.
  • Develops workplan with recruitment team for recruitment strategies and assists where needed.
  • Manages assigned agreements by implementing scope of work, tracks budget; prepares reports and supports the development of new budgets, task agreements and work as outlined in the task agreements.
  • Develop alumni programming for HPTC members past and present to track their service experience and related job placements
  • Reviews all Intern workplans and reviews tasks and ensures compliance within OSHA and workers compensation risk management practices; manages all workers compensation claims

Category II – Member and Site support

  • Working with the assigned Program Coordinator(s) foster an environment of inclusion for all members through onboarding, member support, on-going feedback, and training opportunities and exiting members knowing / assisting them in their plans for after service.
  • Leads high-quality programming including member engagement and professional development for positive member experiences and exceptional partner and program accomplishments,
  • Continue the development of and ensure member engagement strategies are being utilized with all members.
  • Engages in the Member training experience; developing and delivering support with Public Land Corps hiring authority that is provided to members with specific guidelines, federal resume writing, arranges travel needs and manages reimbursements.
  • Supports training asks from NPS/HPTC.
  • Provides contacts and support for housing in the Frederick area and other site locations as needed.

Category III –Development and Community Engagement

  • Operate as a consistent spokesperson and promoter for preservation, trades, and corps programming, both internally and externally.
  • Develops a relationship with Maryland Service Commission
  • Cultivates and manages emerging Maryland project partners and supporters.
  • Supports the work of Preservation Maryland in establishing a Trades Corps model
  • Support local and partner external communication objectives, including marketing, press, branding, and social media.
  • Organize and/or attend community events in support of corps programming, trades, and preservation
  • Working with the Corps Directors for Stewards and Appalachian Conservation Corps, identify project partners, grants, and other sources of revenue to grow and establish a Maryland based Conservation Corps program.
  • Works with National Partnership Director and Regional development team to support and connect additional programming around preservation and trades as assigned

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Preservation preferred; Bachelors in Business Management, Preservation, or Conservation
  • Two to four years needed in corps or preservation trades programming, construction or archeology needed to understand the work being performed and/or tasked to

  • Ability to successfully work in a fluid, changing work environment.
  • Ability to operate Microsoft Office programs and applications, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to keep others and oneself, in remote locations, accountable to expectations.
  • Valid Driver’s License and Insurable Driving Record per Personnel Policies.
  • Must be able to pass the organization’s criminal history check requirements.
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting.
