Historic New England seeks a full-time Preservation Carpentry Supervisor who is experienced in and passionate about historic construction and repair. As a solution-minded and collaborative member of our property care team, the Preservation Carpentry Supervisor plays a key role supporting smooth, efficient, and cost-effective management of the preservation carpentry crew in the care and maintenance of the properties in our collection.

Classification: Full time; Exempt

Location: Lyman Estate, Waltham, Massachusetts; New England residency required; Regular New England region travel required

Key Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Project Management: Consults on condition at the sites, developing treatment proposals, documenting all phases of work in an appropriate manner, and demonstrating in all actions a commitment to long-term preservation and maintenance of historic resources. Mentors staff carpenters and supports the work of Historic New England to train the next generation of craftspeople through a variety of initiatives.
  • Maintenance & Repairs: Performs maintenance and repairs based on work plans that adhere to Historic New England’s preservation philosophy and established protocols. Work can include but is not limited to timber frame repair, rough and finish carpentry, fence or other landscape element repairs, window maintenance and restoration, plaster stabilization, masonry re-pointing, painting, and any number of minor repairs.
  • Mentorship: Mentors staff carpenters and supports the work of Historic New England to train the next generation of craftspeople through a variety of initiatives

Skills and Qualifications:

  • New England residency required
  • Minimum of 6 years of preservation carpentry experience in a lead worker role
  • Fully competent computer skills, including working knowledge of MS Office Suite, databases, internet research, budget spreadsheets, and e-mail management
  • The ability to operate effectively in a team environment, where communication within and among the teams is essential to success. Ability to interact and communicate orally and in writing is essential
  • Problem solving skills and ability to effectively plan and implement work processes to complete tasks according to schedule
  • Strong knowledge of historic construction and repair techniques
  • Competency in the use of hand and power tools
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation
  • Knowledge and understanding of current OSHA guidelines relating to construction work
  • Verification of full COVID-19 vaccination status or exemption approved by Historic New England prior to the start date of employment
  • Commitment to the values of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion

Salary: $55,000-$60,000
