Rehabilitation Technician – Timber Carpentry

The Northwest Railway Museum is seeking a Rehabilitation Technician. This position is best suited for those trained as a shipwright with over 10,000 hours of experience. They will execute rehabilitation and restoration and maintenance projects on the Museum’s large artifacts with volunteers and other staff. The Rehabilitation Technician will work closely with the Collections Care Project Manager to ensure prioritization of project needs, and compliance with historic restoration standards as outlined by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Skills applicable to this work on our large object collection of coaches, freight cars and locomotives include pipefitting, welding, cabinet making, metal working, glazing, painting and cleaning. The position includes working with various tools in both indoor and outdoor settings; periods of standing, bending, crouching, and lifting; and managing others. Experience in a workshop setting, with a specialty in either wood or metalworking is required. A background in historic preservation, museum exhibits design and construction, or shop class teaching is desirable but not required.

The position is full-time. The workweek is Tuesday-Saturday and will include some full-weekends and holidays during special events. Collections Care Technician will be based primarily out of the Museum’s Conservation and Restoration Workshop, but may work on occasion at the Snoqualmie Depot (during events including Day Out With Thomas™, Railroad Days, Santa Train and other activities). Successful candidate will be subject to a background investigation, credit check, vaccine verification.
