Beginner Blacksmithing Workshop (September)

This beginner-friendly class focuses on the fundamentals of blacksmithing while crafting your own custom grilling tools including a steak flipper, egg spoon, and a set of BBQ tongs—a perfect addition to your grilling or kitchen arsenal! We’ll start by making a steak flipper, learning how to forge tapers and create smooth, elegant curves. This project will introduce you to controlled hand forging and using heat to shape your work with precision. Next, you’ll forge an egg spoon that will involve cutting out the bowl of the spoon from sheet metal using a shear and use a swage block to hot shape the bowl. The handle will be forged from flat bar, and you’ll learn how to isolate material using a blacksmith guillotine tool and controlled hand forging. The handle and bowl will be attached using traditional rivets and you’ll be introduced to monkey tools and rivet headers. Finally, you’ll use your learned skills to transform a flat bar of steel into a pair of beautiful, functional BBQ tongs using precise hammer control. You’ll learn how to isolate material, forge specific shapes, and move metal in different ways using the hammer peen. We’ll also introduce top tools and fullers for accurate material isolation, working with a striker and partner to achieve the desired results. By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a set of BBQ tools crafted with your own hands, ready for use at the grill or table. You’ll also leave with a solid foundation in blacksmithing skills, giving you the confidence to take on future metalworking projects.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

**We plan workshops 6-12 months in advance and make every effort to accurately calculate material costs. Due to fluctuating costs of materials, we will notify you 2 weeks in advance of the start of your workshop if the price has increased. Typically this will be a marginal fee of $10-$50.
