This course presents the basic techniques and principles of house building and carpentry.

This course includes:

  • The concepts of plumb, level, and square and how they rule the framing process as well as how to track and measure them to keep your projects in “good shape.”
  • Measuring angles and using basic construction geometry with the framing square for building roofs and stairs.
  • Building competency with both hand and power tools to be able to measure and cut to within 1/32 of an inch.
  • Good use of the many tools you would find on a house-building project, including those for measuring, marking, cutting, shaping, attaching materials, and deconstruction.
  • Tricks of the trade to make your work easier and safe

This course gives students a basic overview of general terms, tools, and techniques used in the field of carpentry. Learn how to safely use a wide range of hand and power tools while building a small structure such as a garden shed. We will go over house framing and layout while looking at the anatomy of a structure, floor, wall, and roof systems. Whether you’re planning on building a house, just want to learn some basic carpentry skills, or want to learn the vocabulary to be able to communicate with a contractor, this course will help you gain the confidence you’ll need.
