Length: Project duration 12 calendar weeks. Opportunity for extension will be offered to acceptable candidates.

Living Allowance: $18/hour, direct deposit every 2-weeks

Title of Position NPS HPTC Historic Stewards – ROVA Masonry Preservation

 

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program. Participants will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

This internship opportunity will focus on specific preservation tasks on the primary resources within the park complex. The Historic Stewards contributions will further the preservation efforts of park staff and enable the visiting public to experience the parks in a well-kept fashion.

Project Focus:

  • Home of FDR East Terrace Rehabilitation– This project will focus on masonry deficiencies with the east terrace flagstone paving. Repairs will include comprehensive removal of all bluestone pavers, disassembly and replacement of stone steps, alterations and improvements to the sand and gravel substrate, utility inspections, gutter/drainage inspections. Comprehensive cleaning will be completed for all paved areas within the terrace. Approximately 1500 sq ft of paved surface area will be addressed.
  • Vanderbilt Mansion– Masonry repairs to numerous brick masonry staircases and retaining walls located throughout the Italian garden located in Hyde Park, NY. The project will focus on 8 key areas within the gardens.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques.
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold. All work will be performed outdoors.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Personal transportation will be required to report to job site
  • United States citizen or legal resident

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in historic preservation and/or masonry trades preferred
  • Ability to commit to a 12-week experience of combined training and hands-on work
  • Seeking to hire candidates geographically located within 50-mile radius of Hyde Park

Benefits:

  • Living Allowance: $18/hr (pre-tax)
  • Public Land Corps Hiring Authority Eligibility – only applicants 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 years old for Veterans with valid DD-214 will be eligible for this benefit.
