Cedar Breaks National Monument located in southwestern Utah is known for its stunning geology, cool summers, and deep connection to the indigenous Paiutes who first occupied the region that extends from the Great Basin to the Colorado Plateau. Today, the National Monument is a popular summer tourist attraction, seeing several hundreds of thousands of people annually.

The national monument at Cedar Breaks has an all too familiar story, sprouting from the conservation efforts of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, and officially being recognized as a National Monument by the National Park Service in 1933. The iconic Point Supreme Overlook, where are our project will take place, hosts several cabins constructed between 1936 and 1937 by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

HistoriCorps is set to restore what was the original Visitor’s Center,  but was retired from duty in 2020 with the construction of a larger modern cabin that better suites the needs of the monument. After being the primary point of contact for nearly 90 years, a human history exhibit was installed in 2021, giving the cabin a new purpose in the 21st century.

In 1983 the cabin was added the National Register of Historic Places and HistoriCorps is delighted to engage volunteers on what will surely be one of our most popular projects this season. To learn more about Cedar Breaks National Monument, please visit the National Park Service’s website.

HistoriCorps is committed to educating and training volunteers in preservation skills, with an overarching mission of inspiring a preservation ethic in all those involved. Learning and working alongside expert HistoriCorps field staff, volunteers and applying the traditional skills necessary to restore the Cedar Breaks Cabin:

  • Log repairs and replacement
  • Exterior wood repairs
  • Exterior staining
  • Stone chimney repairs

Please note: Tasks vary by day and by week, depending on a variety of factors including: weather, project priorities, previous groups’ work, and more. Though it is likely you will get to learn and practice most or all of the above tasks, it is not guaranteed. The higher percentage of the scope a particular task is, the more likely you will get to practice it.
