Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with the NPS are seeking an intern who will successfully serve as an integral crew member on a historic preservation team. The Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) is dedicated to the safe preservation and maintenance of national parks or partner facilities by demonstrating outstanding leadership, delivering quality preservation services, and developing educational courses that fulfill the competency requirements of service employees in the career fields of Historic Preservation Skills, Risk Management, Maintenance, and Planning, Design, and Construction.

The HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.

This internship position will work with Park facilities team and the Historic Preservation Training Center to focus on the historic preservation of Indiana Dunes National Park. The member will participate in numerous historic preservation projects including historic building structures within the park. The participant will learn how to perform different skills of historic trades such as carpentry, masonry, and painting to help retain and preserve the historic character of Indiana Dunes National Park as well as provide improved visitation experiences for the public.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with wood, brick, stone, and metal materials associated with historic preservation.
  • Use of powered and hand tools.
  • Maintenance, repair, and preservation of historic buildings.
  • Jobsite safety & use of personal protective equipment.
  • Physical fitness to perform job duties.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
  • United States citizen or legal resident.
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry and common hand tools.
  • Basic background in building maintenance and/or construction.
  • Willingness to learn preservation skills and safety protocols.
  • Follow HPTC’s project agreement and safety plan.
  • Positive attitude.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in roofing, carpentry, painting, or masonry is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to commit to a 26-week experience of combined training and hands on work.
  • Ability to legally operate motor vehicles.
