Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
This role provides an overview experience of the Facility Maintenance division of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The Water Lab & Utilities Shop Intern will work independently and/or as part of a small team on water/wastewater operations and maintenance on systems parkwide. In addition to performing these tasks, the intern will engage in a wide breadth of professional development opportunities.
The position will receive clear cut assignments from the mentor/supervisor in the form of written and oral instructions. Assignments are always received with accompanying instructions concerning the work methods to be used. Problems are reported to a higher-graded worker or supervisor.
Work is both indoors and outdoors where the Steward may be subject to prevailing weather conditions. The intern follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing that may be uncomfortable to wear. The intern is required to attend and participate in safety meetings and trainings and review safety regulations and policies prior to using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The position is located in the town of Mimbres, New Mexico. The mission of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is to preserve and protect the archaeological and cultural resources of the ancient Mogollon people, who inhabited the area over 700 years ago. The monument aims to provide opportunities for education and interpretation of the unique cliff dwellings and surrounding landscapes, fostering an appreciation for the history and significance of this heritage site. It also emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts to maintain the ecological integrity of the region while promoting sustainable visitor access and experiences. The Facilities Department at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is dedicated to providing safe, sustainable, and high-quality infrastructure and services that enhance the visitor experience while preserving the natural and cultural resources of the area. We strive to maintain and improve our housing, visitor centers, trails, recreation facilities, and essential utilities, including water and wastewater systems. The Water and Wastewater Program Intern will assist in the management and operation of a small-scale water and wastewater system at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. This position offers hands-on experience in environmental management, water quality monitoring, and sustainable practices within a unique historical context.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As a Stewards AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has served their total amount of service hours, satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
