Step into the world of round log timber framing, where the beauty of natural wood meets the precision of traditional joinery. Unlike conventional timber framing, this unique craft replaces square-sawn timbers with carefully de-barked logs, preserving their organic shape while integrating the structural integrity of timber frame joinery. The result is a striking hybrid of log building and timber framing, utilizing the natural form of the tree to create a beautifully sculptural structure.

In this 6-day hands-on course, students will learn how to lay out and cut full-scribe round log timber frame joinery. Beginning with the fundamentals of scribing and log selection, students will explore how to position and align logs before using bubble scribes to transfer contours between intersecting members. Once the layout is complete, students will use a combination of chainsaws, axes, adzes, chisels, gouges, and mallets to cut precise joinery, culminating in the assembly and raising of a small round-log timber frame.

This class is an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of organic timber framing, blending fine craftsmanship with the raw beauty of round logs. By the end of the week, students will have mastered the core techniques of round log timber framing, bringing together the artistic beauty of natural logs with the engineering precision of timber framing.

All tools and wood are provided, though students are welcome to bring their own hand tools.

The timber frame structure is available for purchase after the course for the cost of materials, approximately $3,000-$5,000 but subject to change. Buyer is responsible for moving the timbers and assembling at their desired location. If you purchase the structure, you can take the course for free. See photos below for the plans for this frame. The final look will be dependent on what materials are available.
