The key to using hand tools correctly is a sharp edge – learn how the masters make it look so easy. Join expert woodworker and machinist Bob Goppold for a one day workshop on sharpening hand planes and chisels. Learn the physical properties of tools, how to know when a blade needs sharpening, and several sharpening techniques. Students are encouraged to bring along their own hand planes and chisels to tune up during class, but you can also sharpen our tools (we don’t mind!)

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about the different types of grinds
  • Learn the differences between sharpening stones
  • Learn how to choose the right abrasive
  • Learn about different sharpening angles
  • Find the right sharpening method that works best for you
  • Even learn a little Metallurgy (the study of the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their inter-metallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are known as alloys)
