The Basics of Timber Frame Construction

This course focuses on timber frames. Students will learn about the material science of wood, what makes a timber frame appealing, and why timber frames are more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and energy-efficient than traditional stick frame structures. Students will lay out, cut, and assemble traditional joinery and, at the same time, we will explore more modern methods of assembly, such as using structural screws. Students will also raise the structure at the end of the week while learning the best practices of raising and rigging. Students will learn square rule timber framing and intermediate framing square use.
