Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
This role provides an overview experience of the Facility Maintenance division of Katmai National Park and Preserve. The Water Lab & Utilities Shop Intern will work independently and/or as part of a small team on water/wastewater operations and maintenance on systems parkwide. In addition to performing these tasks, the intern will engage in a wide breadth of professional development opportunities.
Work is both indoors and outdoors where the Steward may be subject to prevailing weather conditions. The intern follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing that may be uncomfortable to wear. The intern is required to attend and participate in safety meetings and trainings and review safety regulations and policies prior to using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
This position is located in the town of King Salmon, Alaska. Katmai National Park and Preserve boasts habitats for, and populations of, fish and wildlife, including, but not limited to, high concentrations of brown/grizzly bears and their denning areas; the water habitat for significant salmon populations; and scenic, geological, cultural, and recreational features. The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of Katmai National Park and Preserve for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. To support this mission, park staff cooperates closely with partners and stakeholders to preserve park resources while providing outdoor recreation and subsistence opportunities.
Description of Duties:
- Assist in the operation of a variety of water treatment systems at King Salmon and Brooks Camp.
- Assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing pumps, holding tanks, distribution pumps, Walchem and LMI metering pumps, injection points, and distribution systems.
- Assist with seasonal start up and shut down of the various well houses, holding tanks, and distribution systems throughout Brooks Camp.
- Assist with collecting and coordinating the delivery of monthly Coliform (TCR), annual Nitrate, TTHM, HAA5, 3 year cycle Lead & Copper, VOC, 9 year cycle Radium 226 & 228, Total Gross Alpha, Arsenic, and Inorganics samples and keeping associated records organized.
- Assist with annual sludge and septic tank sludge removal, treatment and disposal operations at Brooks Camp and at Lake Camp locations.
- Assist with maintaining the wastewater collection lines in good condition and keep the wastewater facilities in good condition.
- Appointee will assist with maintaining, operating, and repairing wastewater storage tanks, lift pumps, force mains, and leech fields.
- Assist with performing plumbing related duties which will include planning, layout, and routing of piping systems specifically related to the water and wastewater fields in potentially culturally sensitive areas requiring cultural and environmental compliance.
- Assist with adjusting the slant, slope, and grade of these systems to ensure the proper operation of the water and wastewater systems.
- Assist with work from sketches and blueprints or other technical data.
- Assist with work on the installation and repair of different types of piping which include ductile iron, copper, galvanized steel, asbestos, PVC, and cast iron as well as transition couplings and valves associated with these materials.
- Assisting with rodding sewer lines, assisting with repairing various pumps, and general plumbing maintenance which includes sewage lift station repairs and wastewater collection systems.
- Assist with accomplishing minor maintenance to buildings, housing, and grounds using the following building maintenance skills: plumbing, painting, and carpentry.
- Assist with freight and cargo handling and will utilize park equipment, vehicles, and trucks for these operations.
- Assist with facilities grounds maintenance.
- This position will require work both indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions and accomplishing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
- Ability to commit to a 31-week experience of combined training and hands-on work
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
- Interest in traditional trades or historic preservation
- Driver’s License & personal transportation will be required to report to job site
- Willingness to learn preservation skills and safety protocols.
- Operate as a good team member within work crew and follow daily direction.
- Follow HPTC’s project agreement and safety plan.
- Be respectful of all members or crew and supervisor staff

Time Requirements:
- This position is expected to serve full time 40 hours per week, but exact service schedules may vary depending on travel and project details.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on a variety of techniques.
- OSHA 1910 & 1926, Operational Leadership, Water, Wastewater & Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, vehicle operation, Job Hazard Analysis, tailgate safety meetings, seasonal orientation, first aid/CPR, park operations.
- Safety training (vehicle, trailer, situational awareness, power tools, etc.)
- Attend NPS Water/Wastewater weeklong training at Kings Canyon/Giant Sequoia National Park, CA, 1 week Water Treatment Level 1 or Water Distribution Level 1 Training to include certification exam in either Anchorage, AK or Fairbanks, AK depending upon availability (2025 class schedule and locations have not been released yet, classes offered through NTL Alaska by Mike Pollen)

Evaluation and Reporting:
As a Stewards AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has served their total amount of service hours, satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
