Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
SIP in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) are seeking an individual for an exciting new opportunity as an Historic Preservation Learning Services Program Assistant. The goal of this position is to provide a behind-the-scenes opportunity to learn and contribute to the full scope youth and training programming provided by . The individual selected for this opportunity will receive direct mentorship from NPS Staff and work closely with the HPTC Youth Program Specialist on the Traditional Trades Advancement Program and other programming.
The Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) of the National Park Service is a centralized department dedicated to the safe preservation and maintenance of national park and partner facilities. HPTC is dedicated to training the next generation of federal employees and stresses preservation philosophy alongside specialized training in masonry, carpentry, and wood crafting. As a Stewards Intern this position will work alongside the HPTC Learning Services Aspiring Preservationist Team to assist in the coordination, development, and continued growth of NPS HPTC Aspiring Preservationist Programs.
Position Responsibilities will include:
Project Management (50%)- Promote and support HPTC initiatives and help execute 2023 program goals.
- Work with the Youth Program Specialist to monitor completion of various program aspects of young adult and veteran program participants.
- Provide assistance with the tracking of project information such as funding, completion reports, project and partner contacts, annual program trends.
- Learn how to draft and monitor financial assistance agreements and program budgets
- Assists with program planning such as cost modeling, scheduling, advertisement, training, execution, and evaluation.
- Help to maintain NPS external partner relationship growth and management.
- Research and recommend program adjustments and improvements based on internal program data and external industry/organization standards and activities.
Correspondence and Reports (15%): Communicate HPTC mission goals and objectives through programmatic and partner correspondences.
- Compose program-related letters, memos, and correspondence as needed.
- Compile information to assist with the creation of reports for project supervisors and HPTC leadership team.
- Receive mentorship in the coordination of collaborative replies to correspondences and reports. This will include relaying instructions to staff, collecting information, preparing replies, and consolidating/coordinating submittal of information.
Program Support (20%): Promote and strengthen HPTC initiatives.
- Assist with program communications and record keeping (e.g., attend meetings, take notes, keep webpages updated, respond to external correspondence, etc.)
- Provide assistance with preparing for and executing in-person events (e.g., tabling, trainings, meetings, etc.)
- Work with HPTC and Program Staff to assist with the coordination of material logistics (e.g., keeping inventory and shipping training materials, participant program supplies, etc.)
Training/Professional Development (10-15%) of the position will be focused solely on individual professional development (training, skill development, working with other NPS departments in individual’s interests, etc.)
Minimum Requirements:
- Ages 18-30
- Responsibility and time management skills to handle remote supervision and remote work
- Very strong communication skills (writing/editing)
- Very strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to pass a federal background check
- Possess a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest and/or experience in one or more of the following: youth programs, workforce development, historic preservation, public administration, program management
- Undergraduate degree in relevant field (e.g. public administration, preservation, social science, parks and recreation, youth and community development, social work, Anthropology, Communications, human services, organizational psychology/management, etc.)
- Experienced in Microsoft Suite applications (word, excel, outlook, sharepoint, powerpoint, etc.)
- Experience with remote work
- Interest in working for a public lands management agency
- Ability to travel for work outside of the local Frederick area periodically
