This workshop will cover how to start a coal fire, learn basic hammer control, and basic blacksmithing techniques. We will also cover safety in the blacksmith shop and learn about hand tools that blacksmiths utilize. Everyone will have the opportunity to choose from different objects that they can forge and take home. No prior experience is necessary to attend this workshop.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
NOTE: Our Dining Hall is closed for the season so lunches are NOT included.

You will need to bring the following materials/supplies to the workshop:

  • safety glasses
  • ear plugs/ear protection
  • leather gloves
  • non-flammable (cotton) work clothes
  • closed-toed leather shoes
  • hair ties for long hair
  • bug spray
  • sports bottle for drinking water

 

About the Instructor:

Mace Vitale is a Journeyman smith in the American Bladesmith Society and a full-time knife maker since 2002. He has been running the Blacksmith program at the Guilford Art Center in CT for the last several years teaching both adults and teens the way of the hammer and anvil.
