This workshop will cover how to start a coal fire, learn basic hammer control, and basic blacksmithing techniques. We will also cover safety in the blacksmith shop and learn about hand tools that blacksmiths utilize. Everyone will have the opportunity to choose from different objects that they can forge and take home. No prior experience is necessary to attend this workshop.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
NOTE: Our Dining Hall is closed for the season so lunches are NOT included.

  • safety glasses
  • ear plugs/ear protection
  • leather gloves
  • non-flammable (cotton) work clothes
  • closed-toed leather shoes
  • hair ties for long hair
  • bug spray
  • sports bottle for drinking water

 

About the Instructor:

Wayne Apgar started blacksmithing in 1997. An avid student and admirer of Dr. Bob Becker, Apgar has continued to learn different techniques and skills every year. Wayne has attended many years of instruction at Touchstone Center for the Crafts, and began teaching there in 2008. Wayne is a member of ABANA, SOFA, and MASA. “Through the formal training I received and the commission of several hundred pieces, I am able to forge most anything small to large.
