In 2017 the Astoria City Council recognized the Clatsop Community College Historic Preservation and Restoration program for being an exemplary preservation partner to the city of Astoria. In 2012, the Historic Preservation & Restoration program received the Outstanding Achievement in Preservation Education award from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation for work on an 1882 homestead cabin in Central Washington. The program has been recognized by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, the Astoria Historic Landmarks Commission, and the Knappton Cove Heritage Center. Our students are currently working on restoration projects at the Knappton Cove Quarantine Station in Washington, the Oceanview Abbey in Warrenton, The Doughboy Monument in Astoria, Alderbrook Hall in Astoria and The Stella Blacksmith Shop in Washington.

The hands-on workshops take students to historic sites throughout the region, where they have the opportunity to work with national and state parks agencies and historical societies. Students study a variety of crafts including woodworking, stained glass, plaster, window and door restoration, and masonry. Our students have used this experience to start successful restoration businesses, work in preservation fields, or work for government agencies. Average starting wages in this field range from $20 to $25 per hour, although many in this industry are self-employed.
