Spend the summer in New Hampshire working to save historic buildings!

The N.H. Preservation Alliance, the statewide nonprofit historic preservation organization, is offering 1 or 2 summer internship positions for students of historic preservation and related fields in conjunction with the preservation trades and professions. Internships span 9 weeks in the summer, split between 5 weeks hands-on site work with a trades firm, Preservation Timber Framing, and 4 weeks of work with the N.H. Preservation Alliance.

Benefits include exposure to the breadth of the preservation field, from construction and repair of structures, to the program, policy, and advocacy work of a preservation-focused nonprofit organization. Interns will be introduced to the preservation professional’s community, policy makers, preservation consultants, supporters and donors, and allied organizations in the field. Interns gain important practical knowledge of how preservation businesses run and how preservation nonprofits function.

The N.H. Preservation Alliance is a non-profit organization based in Concord, NH that supports and encourages the revitalization and protection of historic buildings and places which strengthens communities and local economies.  N.H. Preservation Alliance partners with Preservation Timber Framing to provide interns with preservation trades training.  Preservation Timber Framing, headed by Arron Sturgis, repairs and restores 18th and 19th century barns, steeples, museums and houses.

Work for the Preservation Alliance will include monitoring and documentation of historic properties with preservation easements. The interns will also help develop and execute educational and promotional programs for property owners and general audiences.  Assignments and projects for the five weeks with our professional trades partner Preservation Timber Framing will be made according to the summer intern’s skill set and the projects available at the time.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will have an understanding of the history and features of older buildings, enthusiasm for historic preservation education and strong organizational and communication skills. The ability to work independently will be important although there will also be many opportunities to work with the Preservation Alliance’s small, energetic staff. Reliable transportation and ability to engage in moderate to heavy physical activity is required. Photography skills are needed. Housing may be available.

Compensation:

Interns will be compensated at $10-14 per hour during their 4 weeks at N.H. Preservation Alliance headquarters and between $10-14 per hour during their 5 weeks with our trades partner. Housing may be available.
