Traditional Trades Advancement Program Intern – Sequoia National Park

Job Description

The Traditional Trades Advancement Program(TTAP)provides hands-on, historic preservation trade skills training during an intensive learning-while-working experience. TTAP allows the important work of preserving the cultural resources and crucial infrastructure of national parks to be passed onto the next generation in a time when many employment fields are becoming obsolete through mechanization. Traditional trades in their modern form require much of the same materials, tools, ingenuity, skills, and hard work that have been required for generations and can never be replaced.

Project Goals and Objectives: The goal of this project is to recruit and train local youth to gain important personal, professional, and vocational skills. Projects and tasks will support Sequoia National Park on repairing historic structures, and follow the guidelines for the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the treatment of historic properties.

o Carpentry
o Wood Working
o Re-roofing
o Woodworking Shop Safety
o Reconstruction & preservation of historic doors and windows

Qualifications: Applicant must have the ability to lift, bend, and carry up to 50 pounds. It is essential that applicants have strong communication skills (written and oral), strong work ethic and the ability to work independently. You must be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment with attention to detail. The intern must be trustworthy, dependable and willing to work with people of different perspectives. Finally, you must have a collaborative attitude and willingness to learn.

Additional qualifications:
• Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
• Must be able to pass a federal background check
• Must be COVID vaccinated

Work Requirements: The incumbent may lift, carry, and bend frequently on the job.

Vehicle/License Requirement: The intern must be 18 and have a valid state driver’s license in order to be able to drive government vehicles. It is recommended that you have a personal vehicle. Dependable transportation to and from the Park is required.

Participant Benefits:
• $18/hour
• 26 weeks (full-time)
