The Campaign welcomes its newest Team Member, Zola Barnes!
Zola joins The Campaign as its Cemetery Preservation Workshop Coordinator–a brand new position funded by a grant from the Rural Maryland Council. Zola will engage with communities throughout the state of Maryland, focusing on rural counties, and lead preservation workshops in historic cemeteries to empower Marylanders to care for their local history. Additionally, she assists with the development of educational materials related to cemetery preservation.
Zola holds a B.A. in Anthropology and a B.M. in Vocal Performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory. She found her love of community-based work during her undergraduate degree, working with local schools to collaboratively develop music workshops for students age 5-13, and has since continued her community-based work with music nonprofits in Baltimore. Originally from Baltimore City, her interest in historic preservation was sparked when doing research for her final recital of her undergraduate degrees, where she researched the music and history of the Hampden-Woodberry mills. She is excited to learn more about her home-state and explore more corners of Maryland.
The Campaign is excited to add Cemetery Workshops to its growing list of resources and training. The workshops will be free and open to the public. We’re working to get these scheduled with rural cemeteries in need–stay tuned for updates on locations and how to register!
